- Water
Instructions:
- Rinse the Heritage Red Wattle fat under cold water to remove any impurities or blood.
- Pat the fat dry with paper towels and then cut it into small, uniform pieces.
- Place the fat pieces in a large pot and add enough water to cover them.
- Bring the water to a gentle simmer over medium heat.
- As the fat begins to render, you'll notice it melting into liquid lard. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
- Continue simmering the fat until all the pieces have rendered completely, and the liquid becomes clear.
- Once rendered, carefully strain the liquid lard through a fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth to remove any remaining solids.
- Allow the strained lard to cool slightly before transferring it into jars or containers for storage.
- Store the homemade lard in the refrigerator for up to several months or freeze for longer-term storage.
